Seed Starting

So today I got some of my seeds underway. Eventually (meaning after Memorial Day) whatever I have will be transferred to the plot of land at my parent's house, but for now I planted seeds. Most of what I grow this year will be straight from seed and right into the ground, rather than as starters. I'm very excited though! I started a whole bunch of herbs: Lemon Basil, Sweet Basil, Chives, Thyme, Oregano, Catnip, and... something else. Oh! Dill! And then I started these tomatoes and then a random assortment of Heirloom tomatoes.

I am hoping there will be good growth. I know that it will be a few weeks yet, but I am hawking them waiting for miraculous growth... I am using Miracle Grow seed starter soil, after all!

I also got some seeds for Sweet Pea flowers and Fox Gloves, as well as some French Breakfast radishes (it was the last packet and I didn't want to miss out!). The flowers won't go in until we get to our new digs in May, and then I intend to also plant some Lily of the Valley there as well. There are some neglected perennials of some sort along the front of the house, so I am going to see if I can nurse them back to health. Otherwise I will just uproot them and start over. I will post pictures as we go along. I would take a picture but there isn't anything too interesting about a dirt filled peat pot greenhouse.

Hey, I love dirt filled peat pot greenhouses! I planted spinach and peas in a little garden about two weeks ago, and am finally starting to see the sprouts coming up--love it. Who knew plants could bring so much joy? In another month and a little bit, I'll be putting in tomatoes, beans, pumpkins, zucchinis, cantaloupe, bell peppers, and whatever else I see that strikes my fancy. I should probably do some herbs, too, but I haven't ventured into that just yet. I love love love growing things. Something about working in the dirt, and growing life. I love it. Glad you seem to, too.

I was speaking with the lady who works at Aubuchon, and she said that she has success just starting things from seed right in the ground, as long as it is after Memorial Day. So, I am still plotting - we're not past last frost yet - I think I will do some peppers, cucumbers, pickling size cukes, onions, watermelon, string beans, potatoes, and hmmm... still debating. We'll see what happens when I actually get into planting. I love my tomatoes though - straight out of the garden on a warm summer day is the best way to eat a tomato. Oh, and we are planting some berries too.
